As Gracie Barra jiu-jitsu students, we strive to have a complete Jiu-Jitsu - that is to say we are competent in all areas the match can take place. Stand up grappling can involve wrestling or judo style takedowns but also, especially in competition style jiu-jitsu, pulling guard. Prof. Rodrigo Fajardo shows us how to use the guard pull properly to begin a match in the guard position that we want.
In our first video, we find Prof. Rodrigo in standing position with collar and sleeve grip with the opponent in bent over defensive stance.
Pay Attention To: How Prof. Rodrigo uses the deception of attempting a sacrifice throw to enter under his opponent's center of gravity and get to a Spider / Single leg X-guard. This situation also occurs if you were attempting a "Tomoe nage" sacrifice throw and your opponent managed to keep their balance and stay standing.
Prof. Rodrigo doesn't merely flop to his back any old way, but arrives in a favourable position when he hits the ground with the grips and hooks that he wants and has control over his opponent.

In video #2, Prof. Rodrigo is going to connect the 2 positions: Guard pull straight to a sweep. A signature part of advanced jiu-jitsu is connecting our positions together as Prof. Rodrigo does here.
Important details: Pay attention to how Prof. Rodrigo completes the sweep by coming to the top with specific details that allow him to win the scramble. Prof. Rodrigo gets a lapel grip to pull himself forward and executes a technical lift to bring his hips forward to come to the top. Don't do all of the work to get the sweep, only to lose your chance to gain the top position because you neglect these details.
