To start the video, Prof. Tussa is trying to pass the opponent's Z-guard (aka the Knee Shield Guard). The opponent has set up a difficult to pass knee shield blocking Prof. Tussa from closing the space.
Note the detail that Prof. Tussa does not persist in passing to his left if the opponent has established a strong frame defense. Prof. Tussa changes tactics and uses his grips and footwork to turn the guard player over onto their other hip to face the opposite direction. Facing in this direction, the guard player has lost their knee shield making it much easier to pass. Check out the slick leg work by Prof. Tussa to put out the hooks and complete the pass.
VIDEO 1: Class 7B - Guard Top - Z-guard changing direction
Our 2nd video we see Prof. Tussa again starting inside his oponent's Z-guard. Prof. Tussa will use a different pass referred to by some bjj fighters as a "Leg Weave" pass due to the action of the passer's legs. Let's take a look.
Notice how Prof. Tussa threads (or laces) his arm over and through the opponent's top leg that is effecting the knee shield. By applying forward pressure, Prof. Tussa overcomes the knee shield and executes a Knee Slice pass to free his leg.
Advanced Detail: Prof. Tussa decides to go to mount instead of fighting to solidify the pass from side control. Prof. Tussa uses his right knee to force the opponents hips to one side and with some nifty foot work, progresses directly to mount and 4 points. You may need to watch the footwork several times to understand how the footwork works.
