When you think of the stand up portion of the match, you probably picture a judo trip or a double leg takedown from wrestling. In jiu-jitsu, sometimes the most expedient way to get the fight to the ground is a guard pull or sacrifice throw. Especially if you feel your opponent is a stronger wrestler than you are.
To start the video, Prof. Victor dominates the grip fight with a cross sleeve grip (similar to a Russian 2 on 1 grip).
Note the concept that Prof. Victor has several different options once he has sat back to guard: he has exposed the opponent's back; he can look for the triangle and he may also close the guard and work whatever strategy he prefers. Multiple attacks.
VIDEO 1: Class 13A : Technique 73 - Pulling to the closed guard
Main Concept: You can see how the guard pull and back sacrifice throws are similar and work great in combination. If your sacrifice throw fails, you are in a strong guard pull position.
Important detail: Prof. Victor is circling towards the opponent's back, which sets up the opportunity for the sacrifice throw.
"I'm constantly going around to the back. Can you see the CJ is automatically circling away from me?...Once he circles, he gives the perfect opportunity for me to step in with this leg here. Look, right on the inside...I keep pulling him to me and lift."
VIDEO 2: Technique 76 - Class 13B - Hook sacrifice throw - Sumi Gaeshi
For the first time a training plan that combines advanced self defense and modern Jiu-Jitsu techniques with highly applicable takedowns in training and competitions.
