The Back Mount us regarded as the most dominant position in jiu-jitsu and also is awarded the most points (4 points) in IBJJF competition. When your opponent in turtle defends your hooks, you need to understand a strategy to control the position and insert hooks in order to advance your position.
In our first video, we find Master Carlos Gracie Jr in Turtle Top looking to insert his hooks to obtain Back Mount but the opponent has wisely balled up tightly, closing the space for hooks. Master Carlos shows a technique to break down the defense and insert the hooks for full Back Mount
Common mistake: Many beginner students get overly excited when their opponent is in turtle and simply leap on the back and hope that there is space for their hooks. When an opponent is tightly defending, there is no easy hook to be had and the attempted back take results in a lost position.

In video #2, Master Carlos is looking to insert his hooks for Back Mount, but the opponent is using their hand to block the space for the first hook
One of the principles of jiu-jitsu is that when our opponent blocks one path, they usually create an opening in a different direction. With his hand defending the hook, the opponent has left his neck unprotected.
Master Carlos secures a deep collar grip and attacks with the Clock Choke (Relogio estrangulamento) which is a variation of the sliding collar choke. The Clock Choke is a very powerful choke and seen at the top levels of competition.
