The essence of judo and jiu-jitsu takedowns is the ability to use your techniques in combination with each other. In fact, the most important Jiu-Jitsu principle for Gracie Barra students to understand is the principle of Action reaction. Let's take a look at this principle in action with Prof. Henrique.
To start the video, Prof. Henrique enters into the well known Hip Throw. The opponent feels the attack and reacts by stepping back with their hips, but leaving their front leg behind.
Note the main concept that Prof. Henrique takes advantage of the opening exposed by his opponent's reaction to the initial Hip Throw to catch the leg pick.

In video #2, note how Prof Henrique enters with a Ko Uchi Gari inside foot trip. The hook momentarily traps the opponent's foot in place allowing Prof. Henrique to reach down and catch the leg for the leg pick.
Important detail: Prof. Henrique's lapel grip with the right hand provides a powerful push to unbalance the opponent. Even though we are watching his left hand grip the leg, the right hand also has an important role in the takedown!
