In our first video we find Prof. Rodrigo in side mount looking to advance to the top mount. The opponent on the bottom is defending well and looking to trap one of Prof. Rodrigo's legs in half guard.
Pay Attention To: How Prof. Rodrigo uses the opponent's defensive reaction of trying to hook Prof. Rodrigo's legs against them by trapping the defensive leg and climbing to Top Mount.
Video 1: Technique - Mount hooking the Closest Leg
Prof. Rodrigo starts in the top mount position as in Video 1, but is looking to submit with a choking hand deep in the opponent's collar.
Important detail! Pay attention to how Prof. Rodrigo triggers the escape by threatening the choke and the opponent predictably responds by bridging strongly in an attempt to reverse the position. This bridge exposes the arm for the straight arm bar.
Common mistake: Many bjj students will turn onto their side to finish the arm bar, but TURN and face the WRONG way - facing the opponents head. This makes it easier for the opponent to escape the arm bar. Prof. Rodrigo turns and faces the direction of the opponent's feet which is much harder to escape.
