In this week's videos we are going to see some takedowns classified as trips where we clinch and use our legs to break the balance of our opponent. The advantage of trips is that we don't end up in a bad position if we miss the trip (compared to lets say a double leg) and trips can used with the gi, no-gi and MMA effectively.
To start the video, Prof. Tussa is clinched in the over-under grip. Each person has an equal grip on the other. How can Prof. Tussa gain an advantage and get rhe trip?
The most important principle at play here is the push / pull to first induce the opponent to step forward and bring his front foot forward so Prof. Tussa can catch it with his own foot. When the opponent reacts by pulling backwards, Prof. Tussa goes with him and drives in on the trapped leg for the trip. An excellent example of action / reaction!
VIDEO 1: Class 16A - Technique 91 - Inside Trip takedown - Ko Uchi Gari
Main Concept: Prof. Tussa uses his movement and foot work to induce the opponent to step forward where he once again can hook the opponent's leg with his own. Both this trip and the first video are categorized as inside trips as the tripping leg enters to the inside of the opponent's legs.
Important detail: Notice how Prof Tussa attacks the trip with complete commitment and drives his bodyweight into the opponent and onto the leg that is being hooked. The opponent is unable to step backwards to retain their balance and falls flat on their back.
