Keeping the Pressure Off: Spider & Lasso Guard is all about learning to recognize when to switch grips and transition between different open guards. The program is taught by 3x Black Belt World Champion Ana Laura Cordeiro.
"What was the most challenging thing for me when I was a white and blue belt? It was for sure guard!" says Prof. Ana Laura. The best place to start is with the basics of the open guard position.
To start the position, Prof. Cordeiro is in closed guard and is looking to secure a double sleeve grip and open her guard and transition to the Spider Scissors Guard control with feet on the opponent's biceps.
Pay Attention To : Prof. Ana Laura makes the distinction between your opponent forcing your closed guard open (and you are reacting to their actions) and making the decision to open the guard yourself and be on the offense. That way, you are ahead in the game and your opponent is reacting to you...instead of the other way around.
