Getting stuck under your opponent's side mount is the number 1 problem that most Gracie Barra white belt students report. This week, we have a tutorial on how to escape one of the most difficult side control variations - the scarf hold variation when your opponent has an under hook.
Pay Attention To : Prof. Victor draws our attention to the position of his inside arm - the arm closest to the opponent. This is the key to the top person controlling the scarf hold position. Prof Victor must make sure his elbow is on the ground and not pulled up by the opponent.

Important Detail: See how Prof. Victor stresses the importance of staying on his side. The top opponent is attempting to pull up the sleeve as a leverage to put Prof Victor flat on his back. If he can maintain a position on his side, Prof Victor has a better chance to hip escape and create room to get his legs in between him and his opponent. Prof Victor leans all of his weight on his elbow making it heavy to lift.
Prof Victor says: "He has to find a way to keep me flat and lift my elbow. What's going to be the that I want to do to stop that? Being flat gives him better control. So being on my side gives me a better escape chance."
