Gracie Barra is excited to offer the first in a series of single position video tutorials coming to GB Online in the weeks and months ahead.
Our first video is an introduction to passing the Outside Hook Guard (aka De la Riva Guard).
To start the video, Prof. Otavio is standing in the opponent's Outside Hook Guard
VIDEO 1: Program Videos Technique 1
Pay Attention To: Prof. Otavio says our first priority when looking to pass the Outside Hook Guard is to get a solid posture. Prof. Otavio starts with a low stance that points his knee (of the leg being gripped at the ankle) to the outside direction. This subtle but important movement negates much of the effectiveness of the guard player's primary means of control - the outside hook with his leg.
Main Concept: In common with most guard passes, there are certain principles that are fundamental to passing the Outside Hook Guard.
1- Start in a good posture with solid balance
2- Secure the grips that you need in order to control your opponent for the pass
3- Systematically break your opponent's control grips and put out their hooks in order to be able to move freely
