In our first video we find Prof. Victor is on top of his opponent in Side Mount with a cross face and underhook - a very solid control position
Pay Attention To: How Prof. Victor stresses the importance of controlling the opponent's hips in side control. "I believe that hip control is the roundabout of a lot of positions. So having that control in the center and to be able to advance to submissions and better controls...I can not get to the head and forget about the hips."
VIDEO 1: Mount from side control
In video #2, Prof. Victor starts in the same initial side mount position but the opponent has been successful in obtaining an underhook and starting to escape. Prof. Victor recognizing that he is in danger of losing his position, transitions to another attack.
Important detail! Pay attention to how Prof. Victor has secured a variation of kesa gatame (technical headlock hold) when he transitions to the opposite side. This exposes different possibilities for attack.
Common mistake: Many bjj students are too static when they get a top side mount. If you try to stay in the same position as the opponent is escaping, you risk losing your side mount altogether. You need to transition as your opponent moves on bottom.
