The opponent of Master Carlos Gracie Jr. is about to force open his closed guard. Master Carlos makes the decision to open his guard and create distance and get his grips for an open guard and immediately look for a sweep.
Note the detail that Master Carlos uses his legs to control the distance between him and the opponent looking to pass his legs into side control. With his free leg, Master Carlos hooks behind the ankle of the standing opponent to prevent him from stepping back when Master Carlos pushes with his other foot on the hip. The opponent is unable to keep their balance and Master Carlos executes the Tripod Sweep.

Our 2nd video we see Master Carlos again dealing with a standing guard passer, but the passer is in s staggered stance and uses his elbow to block Master Carlos from being able to place his foot on the opponent's hips.
Notice how Master Carlos immediately places his left foot in the outside hook position to control the movement of the passer. It's vital to not allow the standing passer free movement and utilize their speed advantage on top.
Special tip: Master Carlos uses his right hand to control the sleeve of the passer. When Master Carlos stretches out the opponent using the power of his legs, the passer is unable to post because his sleeve is controlled. Master Carlos unbalances the opponent in a forward direction and the sweep is complete.
